Diwali faral recipes - Shankarpale

Wishing everybody a very happy Diwali - 2020. It's been a year filled lots of downs and the entire year has just passed in Coronavirus pandemic. But our small little traditions can keep the candle of joy burning within us. Small pleasures like making our favourite diwali snacks at home can still keep that positive sentiment alive.Sharing a very simple diwali faral recipe of salted Shankarpale as we call in Marathi and Shakkarpaara in Hindi.


Ingredients -

  1. 250 gm Maida/All-purpose flour

  2. 7-8 tbsp hot oil

  3. ~ 3/4 tsp to1 tsp salt

  4. 1 tsp crushed ajwain

  5. 1 cup water at room temperature

Procedure -

  1. Add ajwain, salt to the maida.

  2. Add oil to the maida and start mixing till you can firm up the maida in your hand.

  3. Now slowly start adding water and knead into a dough. Dough should be too soft nor too hard.

  4. Cover it and leave it for 20 mins.

  5. After 20 mins, make round balls and then roll each one to make a flat roti.

  6. Give vertical cuts to the roti. Then cut it at an angle to give thin slongated diamond shaped slices.

  7. Fry them in hot oil and they are ready to be served.
